Hi! This is SGT-Fun. I am a guest author on this amazing site! I hope you enjoy my article about historical fiction.

Historical fiction may not be one of the most popular book genres, but it is my favorite genre.  I love that historical fiction transports readers to another time and place, either real or imagined.  Most historical fiction books are based on a real person or a real situation from the past.  Some authors just want to shed some light on a piece of history that may become forgotten over time.

One thing that I really like about this genre is that it transports readers back in time to a place where things were different.  You read about a time period that is different from yours and you learn about how times have changed. You learn about what had to be sacrificed to make the world what it is today.  In some ways, reading historical fiction is like taking a history class, you read about how the past has affected the present and how the present affects the future.

Some people love how fantasy books or science fiction books transport you to an entirely different world.  Whereas historical fiction is placed in the past of the world we live in.  Since many historical books are based on true events, oftentimes you can do some of your own research to learn more about the topic in your book.  The internet makes researching any topic a lot simpler.

Now I know that when most people hear the term historical fiction they think of books written about World War I, World War II, and the Civil War. Historical fiction covers a lot more than just wars.  Though wars are a common topic among historical fiction writers, there are many books on other time periods as well.  The 19th century is a popular time period to write about.

When reading historical fiction you really have to find the time period that is right for you. That’s what’s so great about historical fiction.  The past keeps on growing so there’s more and more to write about.  If you don’t like one time period try another time and place that appeals to you more. Historical fiction is flexible.

Which time period do you like the most? Which time period do you wish more was written about?  Let me know in the comments!

Thank you for letting me share my thoughts on this subject.
