“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” – Psalm 27:14 (ESV)
It takes strength to wait on the Lord, doesn’t it? How much easier is it to go my own way and to push through my agenda than to sit and wait upon what the Lord has for me? It is hard to sit. It is hard to wait, especially when our hearts are heavy and in pain. When we are waiting on the Lord, it is often the hardest thing we can do, and it takes a great amount of strength to surrender our lives and the lives of our loved ones to Him.
After Charlie Kirk was assassinated, I felt deeply disturbed and the need to do something about it. However, when life gets hard, eating has always been a little escape for me. So, September 10, I was driving home from Culver’s when the Lord said to me: “You should fast tomorrow.” I was not jazzed about it. Giving up breakfast was the last thing I had in mind, especially with all of this inner turmoil and political turmoil. I need something to calm me down!
The next morning, my eyes blinked awake and I knew I needed to fast and pray. So, I pulled off the covers and walked into my living room to start reading my Bible. While getting my pens and highlighters out, Matthew 4:4 came to mind: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” It is what God has for me today that will fill my soul, not a yummy muffin or a rich coffee. When we wait upon the Lord, we do not need a cope to help us along. All we need is God and His Word to guide and to care for us. He will sustain us in our times of need and speak to us in our waiting. Psalm 34:18-19 declares: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all” (NIV).
