Songs to Encourage

I start almost every morning the same way: I get up out of bed, go start the kettle for my mushroom coffee, and pull out all of my materials for personal Bible study. It’s easily become my favorite part of the day. It’s a time to slow down, learn something new, and reflect on what God is doing around me.

Some mornings, when I am about to start working on Bible study homework or reading a book, a song flutters into my soul and the lyrics sing encouragement over me. The Spirit has always spoken to me through music and I know that’s true for many Christians. Yesterday, I was blessed to hear Jeremy Riddle’s “Fall Afresh,” specifically the chorus into the bridge:

“Spirit of the living God / come fall afresh on me / come and wake me from my sleep / blow through the cavern of my soul / pour in me to overflow / to overflow.”

The poetry of these lyrics and the soft style of the guitar lend to the powerful words sung out to God. This song calls for an internal revival of the spirit. It’s a beautiful reminder of how quickly we fall asleep in complacency and our souls become empty, needing to be refilled by the Spirit.

The chorus starts with acknowledging the need and the bridge invites us to ask the Holy Spirit to enter that cavernous place we have and fill it with God’s glory and Spirit:

“Come and fill this space / let your glory now invade / Spirit come and fill this space / let your glory now invade”

Matt and I talk often, when listening to worship music, about how there are good songs and anointed songs. The way we can tell the difference is that when we hear them or play them at church, our spirits respond to the Spirit dwelling in us. An example is “Yeshua.” It’s such a simple song and it’s very repetitive, making you think it wouldn’t be all that special, but every time we hear it, both of us experience the presence of Jesus. So, whenever I feel empty and need to recalibrate myself, I turn to these songs. They remind me of who is greater and who my eyes need to be set on – God. Music can be that little piece of heaven that carries us from one moment to the next. Praise the Lord for music that allows us to experience His peace and joy!
