Caleb Breakey’s first ever novel The String is an exciting novel about a man who gets pulled into a wild game of cat and mouse where lives are at stake. He must figure out who a man- self-titled as “the conductor”- is before more lives are taken and threats are carried out.
This book had some really positive elements. I liked the protagonist, college cop Mark Haas, because you could root for him! He wants to win this game against the conductor but wants to triumph his way, not by bowing to the conductor’s demands and threats.

Despite the fact I enjoyed this novel, The String has far too many characters. In the end, it is revealed who the antagonist is, however, because there are so many characters I struggled to remember who that person was and why they mattered! I think if Breakey would have brought the character into the spotlight more frequently I would have been totally on board but I had to jog my memory on who this person was. This totally took away from the shock factor-for me- and I read it in about 10 days! I think I should’ve have known exactly who it was.
The String by Caleb Breakey is a decent novel. It has suspense, action, and a decent conclusion. However, the shock factor was lacking due to too many characters. Nevertheless, it was still a fun ride!
