Piper and Hazel go to a party one evening when they are picked up by some handsome older guys. These men kidnap them and put the girls in a situation no one could’ve expected. Piper, Hazel, and a couple other teens must fight their way out of a wicked world designed by two young men. The question is, can they withstand the pressure long enough to escape?

This book is a real 50/50 for me; that’s the best way to put it. On the one hand, I enjoy the scariness of having to survive multiple circumstances and the fear of what’s to come. It’s constantly in question if they should try to break out. On the other hand, this book has heavy tones that you can’t seem to escape.

When I picked up this book, I pictured about what Preston presents: a creepy YA fiction that has a “Saw” movie vibe. However, the heavy handed swearing and the difficult ending made it hard for me to enjoy this read. I honestly would not read it again and really wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless they were a die hard horror/thriller fan. For those who aren’t fans, this book would shock and terrify. Ultimately, it wouldn’t be a positive experience.

Despite these rough elements, it is still an entertaining thrill ride of jumbled nerves and anticipation. I think this novel would have been a real winner if not for the horrible ending. I won’t spoil it but I will say if you hate bad endings, I’d definitely skip Natasha Prestson’s The Lost.

Do you have an aversion to bad endings or do they spice up your books? Tell me about it in the comments!
