Star Wars, Marvel Comics, Star Trek. When I think of sci-fi, those are the famous books, movies, and tv shows that come to mind. Sci-Fi has become a beloved genre for many, including myself! I just don’t like reading it. I only like watching it!
Science fiction is an incredibly unique and intelligent genre. It’s frequently teamed with fantasy to create a colorful, vivid world that’s filled with detail. That right there is the part I don’t like. The details needed to create a new world can be very taxing in my opinion. However, once I get through the sometimes obnoxious level of world building, I love it! I feel like I’m on a vacation to a place that’s nowhere close to home. It’s amazing! Just gotta get passed all the monotony of designing said world.
Even though the world building can be rough, sci-fi can go bad because there isn’t enough attention to detail. I have read one too many books where the world seems all thrown together and it’s not functioning like an actual society where there are reasons for things being the way they are. The world just doesn’t make any sense or it can seem like someone took our current world, tweaked it and called it good. It doesn’t stretch your imagination enough.
I have had some books from this genre that I did love! My favorite out of them all would probably be Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game. I originally watched the movie and later read the novel but I would say it was amazing. I wasn’t bombarded with details but I was transported into a bizarre world that I want to know all about. I could totally reread it because of how much I adored being in a world that was partly developed by my own imagination. If the author does a good job, then sci-fi can be embraced by anyone. If done poorly, it can be burdensome, dreary and dull.
Do you have a favorite sci-fi flick or book? Tell me about it in the comments!
