Three Fictional Characters I Can Relate To

I have a lot of favorite movies, books, TV shows that come from all different genres. From Sci-Fi to even romance, I usually love these stories because I love the characters. I can enjoy almost any story if the characters are life-like and lovable. The ones I usually like the most are the ones that are like me. Even though I have thought about this, I haven’t thought about writing about it until the other day when Jarilissima created a post titled “Fictional Characters I Identify With”. In it, she discussed characters she has felt a connection with and I thought it was awesome! It was great to hear someone else had this thought too. So, to carry on the post idea, here are my three I relate the most to!

Ender’s Game by Oreson Scott Card – Ender Wiggin

In 5th grade, I remember watching the movie adaptation of Oreson Scott Card’s book and loving it. People who read the book thought the movie was okay but as a kid who hasn’t read it, I adored it! The protagonist is a child protigy who is picked to command an army in destroying an alien race that has attacked before and will most like do so again. Ender is a unique character because he is leadership material but keeps to himself and has a bit of a problem with authority. I frequently found myself in this boat all throughout my childhood into my teens years. We both have a tendency of going past an authority figure and doing things that we maybe shouldn’t do. We just make the executive call then plan to pay the consequences. In the story you see this trait pay off as far as getting the job done but also bites him constantly with adults and even his peers.

Emma by Jane Austen – Emma Woodhouse

Emma knows who she is (handsome, clever, and rich) and that causes her to be bit arrogant and get into situations she shouldn’t. She’s lonely and bored with only her father to keep her company so she finds a friend to matchmake for. As far as confidence/arrogance goes, not gonna lie, I got to watch myself. Sometimes, I think I have things when I really don’t which can cause all sorts of craziness for me! This isn’t out of left field though, Emma is very capable and talented. She knows what she can offer to the world and isn’t gonna pretend she doesn’t. So there’s this struggle between good self confidence and just straight up arrogance throughout her story and I totally understand that!

BBC show “Sherlock” – Sherlock Holmes

The original character Sherlock Holmes is a bit less relatable because he rarely shows any emotion at all. He is almost this machine whereas this show’s Sherlock is filled with sarcasm, wit, and thoughts that all come constantly. Much like the title character, I am finding myself constantly on a different plain of thinking with others. Whether it’s something small like doing something more efficiently or a life question like “why do people suffer?” I am looking at things from another angle. This can lead to some people saying “Wow! Good for her for being an out of the box thinker,” or it can lead to judgement or misunderstandings.

Sherlock is also terribly sarcastic and doesn’t always think about how things can come off to others. I will be well-meaning and say something that was extremely blunt and even worse I won’t read the room so I just walk away like nothing happened! I am very logical and don’t always think about how something made someone feel. Later, I will question if what I said came off a bit too harsh!

I have a lot of fun finding characters with a piece of myself in them and seeing that play out in a different world or setting with different people! In the end, these characters are not mirrors of who I am but they are definitely pieces of the mirror that make a reflection of me!

Do you guys have a fictional characters you have related with? Tell me about it in the comments!
