Trust & Obey

What do you think of when you hear the word vacation? Basking in the sun on a beach? Sight seeing? Or maybe trying fun foods? How about driving down to Kentucky to spend a week with twenty-four family members (fourteen of the group being children)? Yeah, I don’t know if I would have thought of that either!

This year in June marks my Oma’s Jubilee as a Christian. A Jubilee is a fifty years period where everyone comes to celebrate, it’s mentioned in the Bible in Leviticus chapter twenty five. So, in commemoration of this auspicious event, Oma offered back in 2019 to take everyone to Answers in Genesis’ Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in May of 2021. I had ambivalent emotions of both excitement and nervousness, but I thought it’d be fun and interesting.

When we were riding in the bus up to the ark, I didn’t really think that it would be monstrously large. I have never been to the ark before but when we first pulled up I was astounded by it’s enormity! It’s the size of roughly one and a half football fields. When we went inside there were three floors all full of exhibits and information on the ark and how it could have worked. The creators explained at the beginning that a lot of the design was speculative so the way they show it is possible but not exactly how Noah would have done it. My favorite exhibit was on the pre-flood world and what it may have looked like. It was so interesting to think about what the ancient world may have looked like and how awful it must have been to make God literally regret making humanity (Genesis 6:6)! The museum was pretty fantastic too! I have always adored museums so, it’s pretty easy to make me happy. While we were there, Answers in Genesis added an exhibit titled “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made” dedicated to explaining child development in the womb and why babies are not fetuses that can be thrown away. It was both hard hitting with facts and kind towards women who have had an abortion.

On top of the sightseeing, I also just had a really good time with family. I was super nervous to go on this trip because I’ve never done something like this in a group of twenty-four people. Despite my hesitations, I ended up loving it. There were difficult moments and times where I was so exhausted but when it was all said and done, I would one hundred percent do it again. It was so fun to get closer to everyone through an activity and having a shared experience. I think we’ll all look back on it as one of the best things we ever did.
