Hey guys! I don’t know about all you, but lately I’ve been obsessed with fairy tales! After Crowned Sunbeam and I did the reviews for The Lunar Chronicles, (please check those out by the way, if you haven’t already!) I decided to do some hunting for fairy tale spin-offs, and guess what, I found tons! I made a list, and am reading The Four Kingdoms by Melanie Cellier! But today were focusing on the novel My name is Rapunzel by KC Hillton.

This book was great! It starts with Rapunzel getting engaged to her true love, Henry, when a tragedy happens, which kills him. (This may seem like a spoiler, but I promise it’s not. This information was given in the prologue). At first what Hilton did upset me, but soon I got over it, and moved on. Which was weird considering that I don’t move on from upsetting things in books easily, but it didn’t faze me as much in Hilton’s novel. I was more excited to see what she would do with it.

The starting time-frame of this book is 1763 when Rapunzel has been cursed and now finds herself immortal. This allows us to journey with Rapunzel ALL the way to 2013! (Crazy right!) We see the trials she faces, including having to watch loved ones die, as the world tries leaving her behind.

I really feel like Henry’s death was the sole purpose for this book. Which was okay because I thought I would enjoy a tragic romance being the center of the plot, but in this book, it gets very annoying. Now, I know what your thinking. Tragic romance? How could it get anoying! Well, Rapunzel is always going back to how much she “misses Henry” and seems to be stuck in their relationship unable to escape it. To love someone so much that even hundreds of years after their death you still haven’t stopped loving them with the same same passion as when they died, is truly incredible. If the author would’ve given more of a background to their relationship I would’ve been greatly appreciated it and and could have sympathized with Rapunzel instead of hearing about how much she misses him without much emotion.

There are a few plot twists in this book, but I found them extremely predictable. If Hilton had tried a little harder in this book, I feel like it would’ve been a huge hit, but I was able to figure out the ending by the middle of the book.

This was an easy read, and I would recommend it to anyone. It was a clean book that anyone who tried would be able to get into.

Thanks for checking out today post! Do you like fairytale spinoffs? What’s your favorite fairytale? Let me know in the comments!
